Every April 23rd, Rio de Janeiro will be borne in red and white in the honors to the Holy Warrior. Catholics, Umbanda and Candomblecists participate in the St. George's party. In addition to religious cults, the tradition is the wheels of samba and the feijoada.
The unprecedented edition of the Paths of the report draws a panorama on various aspects of the cultural and faith manifestations present in the celebration in this Monday program (28), at 23h, on TV Brasil. With the title “Salve Jorge, a popular saint”, the journalistic production of the public broadcaster can still be accompanied by the TV Brasil Play app and is also available on YouTube of the channel.
The form of celebration, which mobilizes the population by mixing culture and religion, “reveals many elements of a carioca sociability,” says Anthropology professor at Fluminense Federal University, Ana Paula Miranda.

The largest agglomeration of devotees takes place at the Mother Church of São Jorge in Quintino Bocaiuva, a neighborhood in the north of the state capital, where the team of the Caminhos da Reporte accompanied the party. According to the parish estimates, more than one million two hundred thousand people passed by.
History, Religiosity and Devotion
According to the Catholic Church, St. George was born in Cappadocia, current territory of Türkiye, and became a Roman soldier. When the Diocletian Emperor began to persecute Christians, he would have refused to abandon his faith and was beheaded on April 23. The service arrived in Brazil with the Portuguese and was impacted by the religiosity of African peoples, which contributed to the popularity of St. George, as explained by historian Luiz Antônio Simas.
In the period when African religions were prohibited in Rio de Janeiro, St. George was assimilated to Orixá Ogum, warrior linked to the arts of iron and technologies. Mother Marcelle, from the Umbanda Tent Union of the children of Santa Barbara, understands that it is possible to think syncretism from the deprivation of ancestry worship, but also from the perspective of the resistance of Africans in diaspora to ensure the practice of their faith.

“It is the people who make their praise, their fraternization. They know they are St. George, but they are there also by Ogum, in Rio de Janeiro, and by Oxóssi, in Bahia. I find it very beautiful as we can now live in harmonious way. It is one of the few moments,” he says.
São Jorge is patron of several samba schools, including the Serrano Empire, which is headquartered in Madureira, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. Singer -songwriter Jorginho do Empire, son of one of the founders of the association, Mano Décio da Viola, says he does not leave home without asking for the blessing of the Holy Protector. “São Jorge is our beans with rice,” he says.
Shooting devotee, actor Nando Cunha organized a charity feijoada on St. George's Day for almost two decades. “He is a guy who is sitting on the train with you. He will drink beer with you and be at Mass with you. He is from your side. St. Jorge is different to the damn. So we party to praise him, to praise the life,” says the artist.
