Nova Iguaçu City Hall conducts periodic cleaning of rivers and values to avoid overflowing
Cleaning, maintenance and disastement of the new Iguaçu rivers and channels occurs all year round as a way to minimize intense rainfall impacts, especially those occurred during the summer. The action, carried out by the Municipal Secretariat of Public Services, aims to improve the runoff of rainwater, with removal of garbage and waste. The service takes place periodically in the city's beds and has already resulted in the removal of 17,000 tons of waste only by 2025.
Last Tuesday (29), teams from the City Hall made a routine cleaning in Rio das Velhas, also known as Rio Guarana, in Miguel Couto. 400 tons of waste was removed, sufficient to fill 16 trash trucks. At the moment, the services are also happening in the Botas rivers and Cabenga, in green meadows.
“With climate change, rainfall has been increasingly intense. River cleaning cannot be intensified only when summer rains occur, it needs to be performed throughout the year to reduce the risk of overflowing,” said Nova Iguaçu Mayor Dudu Reina.
According to the Department of Public Services of Nova Iguaçu, in addition to solid waste, such as clay and mud, much of the material removed from the city's rivers during cleaning are domestic waste and debris. These items end up preventing the passage of water and strangling the bed, contributing in a long way to overflow.
“The garbage thrown irresponsibly in the rivers of the city ends up forming a barrier that makes it difficult to flow from waters. We have removed many tires, household waste bags, pet bottles, milk boxes and even windows, doors and sofas. The disposal of garbage and rubble should be done regularly as guidelines of the city so that this same material does not return to the resident's house who used the river during the rainfall, as it helps provoke the overflow of the river, ”commented the Secretary of Public Services of Nova Iguaçu, Alexandre Ferreira da Silveira.
The city offers free home collection service of rubble, furniture, galls, recyclables and other materials by telephone (21) 4141-4920 (removal of electronics) or 0800 023 2626; 2768-9234. or 2768-8024 (withdrawal of appliances), in addition to the collection of recyclable materials by the e-mail [email protected].
